General information only
The guides, size charts, weight figures and regulatory summaries on this site are written to be genuinely useful and are researched carefully. They are still general information. They are not legal advice, engineering advice, environmental compliance advice or insurance advice, and they are not a substitute for confirming requirements with the relevant authority.
Weights, sizes and capacities
Container dimensions differ between manufacturers, and the weight of a given material varies considerably with moisture, age and composition. Every figure published here is an approximate working number intended to help you choose a size, not a specification. The dimensions and allowance that apply to your rental are the ones confirmed on your quote.
Regulations and permits
Lake County has one permit rule worth knowing up front, and it comes down to where the container sits. On your own private property — a driveway, yard or jobsite — you do not need a permit at all, which covers most jobs. If the container has to sit on a public street, sidewalk or right-of-way, the city that has jurisdiction requires a right-of-way permit through its Public Works office before placement; there is no cubic-yard threshold and no fire-department permit. Lake County and FDEP (the state environmental and solid-waste authority) do not issue dumpster or street-placement permits — that is a city matter for incorporated addresses and a Lake County Public Works matter for unincorporated ones. The communities we cover — Eustis, Tavares, Leesburg, Clermont, Groveland, Minneola, Umatilla, Howey-in-the-Hills, Astatula, Montverde, Mascotte, Sorrento, Fruitland Park and Lady Lake — are each a separate municipality (or unincorporated area under the county) with its own public-works office, not a branch of Mount Dora. We have not cataloged a specific fee or process for each; for a job that needs street placement outside Mount Dora, confirm directly with that city's own public-works office before you book, rather than assume Mount Dora's process carries over.
Florida landfill restrictions and open burning
A few materials are kept out of a general landfill load in Florida and need their own path: whole scrap tires (handled under the state's waste-tire program), lead-acid (vehicle) batteries, used motor oil and oil filters, major appliances and other white goods (especially units holding refrigerant, which must be removed by a certified technician), electronics, and any household hazardous material such as paint, solvents and pesticides, which is never accepted in a dumpster. Lake County Solid Waste runs residential drop-off sites that take household trash, brush and recyclables from county residents, and construction-and-demolition debris goes to the Lake County Central Landfill on County Landfill Road in Tavares. Separately, open burning is governed by the Florida Forest Service and FDEP rules: burning household garbage is never allowed, and construction and demolition debris, tires, shingles, treated wood, plastics and siding are never legal to burn — which is exactly why they go in a container and on to the landfill or a recycler. Burning natural yard brush and land-clearing debris is tightly limited and typically requires an open-burn authorization from the Florida Forest Service; local ordinances and county burn bans during dry spells can be stricter still. Ask us before you book if you are not sure which category your material falls into.
Hazardous materials
Handling of hazardous waste, and abatement of materials such as asbestos, is regulated under Florida environmental law and federal occupational-safety law, and above defined thresholds must be carried out by licensed contractors with proper testing, notification and disposal — a rule that matters given how much of Lake County's historic-district and older lakeside housing stock predates modern building materials. Nothing on this site should be read as suggesting that such material may be placed in a container or handled without the required testing, licensing and notification.
